Food storage

Food goes to waste in the gap between opening it and finishing it. These pieces close that gap: a lid that stretches over half a melon, a sealer that closes an open bag of crisps, a pump that draws air out of an open bottle of wine, and bottles that keep sauces tidy.

Covering bowls and cut fruit

Silicone stretch lids replace plastic wrap on bowls, mugs and cut fruit. Each lid stretches over a rim larger than itself and grips as it pulls back. The set of six runs from small to large, so check the sizes on the product page against the bowls you use most before you order.

Sealing bags and bottles

The mini bag sealer heats a narrow strip as you slide it along the top of a crisp, cereal or frozen veg bag, closing it again. Its battery is inside and charges by USB, so there is no plug to worry about. The wine saver pump fits its stoppers into an open bottle and draws out air with a few strokes, which slows the wine going flat over the next few days.

Sauces, oils and honey

A set of five squeeze bottles keeps homemade dressings, sauces and pancake batter in pouring order, and makes it easy to drizzle a neat line rather than a puddle. The acrylic honey dispenser releases honey or syrup from the bottom when you squeeze its trigger, so the outside of the jar stays clean and nothing drips down the cupboard shelf.

None of these claims to keep food fresh for a set number of days. How long anything lasts depends on the food, the temperature and how it was handled before it was covered, so use your normal judgement and the date on the pack. A covered bowl in the fridge still needs eating within a few days.

Questions

They grip best on round rims. A square or rectangular dish with rounded corners can work with a lid big enough to cover it, but sharp corners stretch the silicone unevenly.

It works on the thin plastic used for crisps, snacks and frozen food. It will not seal paper, card lined with foil or thick zip bags, and the product page lists what to avoid.
