The whole unit comes apart without tools, which matters because the part that needs attention most is the one hidden inside the pump housing. Lift the impeller out monthly and brush the housing rather than rinsing it, since the slippery film that builds up on wet plastic slides away from running water but comes off easily under a brush.
Rinse the tank and stream cover weekly. If you use any detergent, rinse until you cannot smell it at all, because a cat will taste the residue and go back to the bowl. Refill with cold tap water rather than boiled or filtered water, since neither offers an advantage once the carbon is doing its job.
