Why the recycling matters
Most dogs drink a fraction of what you pour and walk away from the rest. With a collapsible bowl that surplus goes on the ground, which means you carry more water than the dog will ever drink to allow for what gets tipped away. Over a long walk in summer that is the difference between enough and not enough.
Tilting this one back sends the leftover water down the channel and into the bottle. Nothing is wasted, nothing goes on your shoes, and the bottle you set out with lasts considerably longer than its stated volume suggests. It also means you can offer a small drink often rather than rationing it, which is the better pattern in heat.
Working it one-handed
The mechanism is deliberately simple: thumb on the button, water flows into the trough, release and it stops. That matters because the other hand is holding a lead. Anything requiring two hands means either putting the lead down or looping it round a wrist, and both are worse than they sound with a dog that reacts to something across the field.
The lock switch is the other half of it. Unlocked, a press releases water, which is what you want on a walk. Locked, the button does nothing, which is what you want in a rucksack next to a phone. Getting into the habit of locking it as you put it away is worth more than any claim about seals.
Choosing a size
Between three hundred and five hundred and fifty millilitres, the right choice is about walk length and dog size rather than thirst. A small dog on a half-hour walk rarely gets through three hundred millilitres. A large dog on a summer hike will empty five hundred and fifty and want more, so on those days plan a refill point rather than sizing up and hoping.
Rinse it out at the end of each day rather than leaving water standing in it between walks. Water left in a warm bottle develops a film on the inside surfaces, and since the trough is the part the dog puts its mouth on, that is the part worth keeping clean. A bottle brush reaches the neck where a rinse alone does not.
