Most powered gravel cleaners are 110 V units built for another market. Running on batteries removes the voltage question completely, and there is no cable to trail into water.
Filter-and-return means no bucket
For a routine substrate clean it pulls waste into the filter bag and puts the water back, so the level barely moves. Fit the siphon hose only when you actually want a water change.
Depth is what defeats cheap cleaners
Two interchangeable extension tubes cover water lines from 34 to 60 cm. Below about 40 cm it will not prime properly, which the supplier states and we would rather you knew first.

What it does and does not replace
A traditional gravel vacuum does two jobs at once: it lifts waste out of the substrate and it removes water, which is the actual water change. This does the first without the second, filtering the water and returning it to the tank rather than to a bucket.
That makes it a complement rather than a substitute. You still need to change water regularly, because the point of a water change is exporting nitrate, and nitrate is dissolved in the water rather than sitting in the gravel. What this covers is the mess that accumulates between changes.
Where it earns its place
Nano tanks are the clearest case. Removing twenty percent of a twenty-litre tank is four litres, and a standard siphon takes that in seconds, which makes controlled cleaning difficult. A battery unit lets you work the substrate carefully without watching the water level drop.
It is also the practical answer for a tank that is awkward to siphon: high on a shelf, a long way from a sink, or in a room where a bucket and a wet hose are not welcome. Being cordless removes the extension lead running to a socket near water, which is worth something on its own.
Substrate matters
Gravel and coarse sand work well: waste is lighter than the substrate, so it lifts into the intake while the gravel stays put. Very fine sand does not, because it is light enough to be drawn up alongside the waste and you end up losing substrate into the filter chamber.
On fine sand the better approach is to hover just above the surface rather than pushing into it, which lifts the detritus sitting on top without disturbing the bed underneath. Work over a third of the tank at a time rather than the whole floor, which keeps disruption down and still covers everything within the month.

After each use
Empty and rinse the collection chamber immediately. Waste left sitting in a sealed chamber decomposes and produces a genuinely unpleasant smell within a day, and the residue is difficult to shift once it has dried on.
Dry the unit thoroughly before storing, particularly around the battery compartment seal, and take the batteries out if it is going to sit unused for weeks. A leaking cell in a stored unit ruins the contacts, and that is the usual reason one of these fails rather than the motor.
