Fleece Zip-Up Dog Top

The one they can wear round the house.

The zip is the reason this gets worn. A jumper pulled over the head is a daily negotiation with most dogs; a zip means the garment goes on without anything passing over the ears.

Why you'll love it

Made for happy, healthy pets

Zips beat pullovers

Most dogs dislike having a garment dragged over their face, and a fussy one will learn to walk away when they see it coming. A zip means you lay it on and close it.

Indoor warmth counts

Thin-coated breeds lose heat in an ordinary cold room, not just outdoors. A fleece layer they can keep on all evening is more useful than a heavy coat they only wear for walks.

A fit for broad chests

Bulldogs, pugs and frenchies are wider than the size chart assumes, which is why standard tops gape at the neck and pinch at the shoulder. The FB cut is made for that shape.

Good fit if

  • Thin-coated dogs that feel a cold house
  • Dogs that object to anything going over the head
  • Indoor wear, since it is light rather than insulated
  • Deep-chested breeds, thanks to the broad-chest size

Look elsewhere if

  • You need genuine winter warmth for standing about outdoors
  • Your dog is double-coated and does not need a layer at all
  • You want something waterproof, as fleece soaks up rain

Why the fastening matters

Most dog clothing is a tube that goes over the head, and a large number of dogs dislike that specifically. The moment of not being able to see, combined with fabric dragging over the ears, is enough to make a dog duck away, and once it has learned to avoid the garment the daily routine becomes an argument.

A full-length front zip removes the step the dog objects to. It is laid on rather than pulled on, which most dogs accept immediately. That difference decides whether a garment is used every day or ends up in a drawer, which matters more than any specification.

What fleece is and is not

Fleece is light, breathable and warm for its weight, which makes it a good indoor layer for a thin-coated dog in a cool house. It is a poor outdoor layer in the wet: it absorbs water readily, and a soaked fleece against the skin removes heat faster than no layer at all.

For a short dry walk it is fine. For standing about in the cold, or anything in the rain, a padded or waterproof coat is the right tool and this is the wrong one. Thinking of it as house clothing that will do for a quick trip round the block is about the right expectation.

The broad-chest size

Standard sizing assumes a dog gets proportionally longer as it gets wider, and plenty of dogs do not. Bulldogs, Staffies, Frenchies and similar carry a chest much broader than their back length suggests, so a garment that fits the body is far too long and one that fits the length will not do up.

A broad-chest cut solves that with extra girth at the same back length. If you have previously bought two sizes up to get a coat around your dog's chest and then had to deal with a garment trailing past its tail, that is the size to try. Measure both the chest and the back before deciding.

Measure the back from the base of the collar to the base of the tail, and the chest at its deepest point behind the front legs. Choose the broad-chest fit if the chest measurement points two or more sizes higher than the back length does.

Good questions

Before you buy

It is cut wider through the chest and shoulders for bulldogs, pugs and frenchies, who are usually between two standard sizes. If your dog is barrel-chested, take it over the equivalent standard size.

It is a fleece mid-layer, not a waterproof. Fine on a dry cold day; in rain put a raincoat over the top of it.

Extra girth at a standard back length, for dogs like Staffies and French Bulldogs whose chest is much wider than their body length suggests. Use it if your measurements disagree by two sizes or more.

For a short brisk walk in the dry, yes. For standing around in the cold or anything wet, use a padded or waterproof coat, since fleece soaks up water and then chills the dog.

Indoors, yes, provided you check underneath every few days for rubbing or matting, particularly in the armpits. Take it off overnight so the coat can breathe.
