Pumpkin Bow Tie Collar

Fifteen centimetres up to seventy-eight. Something in there fits.

Fifteen centimetres at one end and seventy-eight at the other. That span is the reason this is here: almost nothing else in the category fits a kitten and a labrador from the same listing.

Why you'll love it

Made for happy, healthy pets

The range of sizes is the point

An XS closes at 15cm and an XL opens to 78cm, which is a kitten at one end and a labrador at the other. Very little else in this category fits both, and it means the cat and the dog can match without you buying from two different places.

The bell is a choice, not a fixture

Every print is sold both ways. A bell is useful on a cat that hunts and unbearable on a cat that sleeps on your bed, so it seemed wrong to decide that for you — which is what the supplier's six flat colour options effectively did.

It comes off in one movement

The whole thing is a bow on a thin adjustable strap, so it goes on over the head and off again in seconds without touching the animal's own collar. Wear it for the evening and go back to the proper collar afterwards.

Good fit if

  • Households with a cat and a dog that should match
  • Kittens, from a 15cm neck
  • An evening rather than everyday wear
  • Anyone who has firm views about bells

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a collar to leave on an unsupervised cat
  • You need something that takes a lead
  • The glitter will bother you, since it is card and sheds a little

The size range is the reason to buy it

Five sizes run from 15-22cm at the extra small to 45-78cm at the extra large. The bottom of that range is a kitten and the top is a large dog, which means one product covers a household rather than one animal. Most novelty neckwear picks a lane, either a cat thing or a dog thing, and buying two that nearly match from two different sellers never looks as good as you hoped.

Measure where a collar sits and take the size whose range contains your figure comfortably in the middle rather than at its limit. The strap adjusts through a slider, so being near the top of a range leaves nothing in reserve when the animal puts on winter weight.

The bell is a real decision, so we split it out

The supplier sells this as six flat colours: three prints, and the same three again with a bell. That framing hides what is actually going on, which is two separate choices: which artwork, and whether the thing makes noise. The page here asks them separately, because they are answered by different considerations and the ten-pence price step buys exactly one of them.

A bell on a cat that hunts gives birds a few seconds of warning, and the evidence that it reduces kills is reasonable if not overwhelming. A bell on a cat that sleeps on your bed is a different proposition entirely at three in the morning. A bell on a dog is mostly just a bell. None of that is our decision to make for you, which is why every print is sold both ways.

Three prints, and what they actually show

The spider print is orange and purple grosgrain with cartoon spiders, and it is the loudest of the three. The web design is black and purple with webs and small bats, which is the one that suits a black cat because the contrast does the work rather than the colour. The third is orange and white with pumpkins wearing witch hats, and it is the gentlest, closer to autumn than to horror, and the one to pick for a photograph with children in it.

All three carry a glitter-card pumpkin at the centre of the bow. Card is the right word: it is not fabric and it is not moulded plastic, so it will not take a wash and it will shed a little glitter in the first few wearings. Sponge the ribbon and leave the pumpkin alone.

Aim for the middle of a range rather than its edge. The slider only takes up slack. It cannot give you length you did not buy.

Good questions

Before you buy

The supplier does not say, and the photographs show an ordinary side-release buckle rather than the pinch-open kind. So treat it as supervised wear on a cat — put it on for the evening and take it off before you go to bed. If you want something a cat can wear unattended, it needs a collar sold explicitly as breakaway.

About 2cm, which is an ordinary cat bell despite the supplier calling it a big bell. It is loud enough to hear across a room and loud enough to annoy you at three in the morning, which is why we sell every print without one too.

It can sit above or below the working collar, but it is easier to put it on its own and leave the proper collar doing its job. The strap is thin and is not meant to take a lead — there is no D-ring on it.

No. There is no D-ring and the strap is thin decorative webbing that is not built to take a load. It goes on alongside or instead of the working collar for an evening, and the working collar goes back on afterwards.

It is about 2cm, which is an ordinary cat bell despite the supplier's title calling it big. Audible across a room, and audible from the landing at night, which is the honest answer to the question most people are really asking.
