Kitchen utensils
A wooden spoon and a good knife cover most cooking. This shelf is for the jobs they handle badly: a jar lid that will not turn, a shoulder of pork that needs pulling apart, the oil sitting on top of a new jar of peanut butter, and a spoon with nowhere clean to rest.

Utensils for grip and strength
A tight jar lid needs a longer lever, not stronger fingers. The adjustable jar opener closes its steel jaws around the lid and gives you a long T handle to turn, so the twist comes from your forearm rather than your fingertips. It comes as a pair, so one can live in a drawer and one by the cupboard where the jars are.
Meat claws work the same way for pulled pork and chicken cooked low and slow. Two forks the size of your palm with long tines tear cooked meat along the grain much faster than a pair of dinner forks, and they double as lifters for a joint coming out of the roasting tin.
Small tools for everyday mess
A silicone utensil rest keeps sauce off the hob between stirs and wipes clean in seconds. The peanut butter stirrer fits through the neck of a standard jar and folds the separated oil back in without spilling it over the rim, which a knife never manages.
For the table, curved seafood scissors open crab legs and prawn shells along the line of the shell, and slotted tongs lift pickles and olives out of the jar while the brine drains back through the holes.
Powered and battery tools
The handheld milk frother runs on two AA batteries, which are not included. It whips warm milk for coffee in about twenty seconds and rinses clean under the tap. Nothing on this shelf plugs into the mains, so the same tool works in a UK or a US kitchen.
Questions
One with a long handle, because the handle does the work. Our adjustable opener grips lids of many sizes and lets you turn with your whole hand rather than pinching the lid.
Each product page says what the tool is made of and anything the supplier has stated about heat. Where no heat rating is given, we say so plainly, so keep plastic tools away from a hot pan and use them for the job they were made for.
