Adjustable Jar Opener

£8.99

A stuck lid is hard to shift because your fingers slip on a smooth, narrow edge. This adjustable jar opener grips that edge with steel teeth and gives you a handle to turn, so the twist comes from your wrist and arm.

How to use it

Three moves for a stuck lid

  1. 01

    Open the jaws

Slide the jaws apart to their widest before you start.

  2. 02

    Set it on the lid

Rest the plate flat on top of the lid with the hooks outside its edge.

  3. 03

    Turn anticlockwise

Turn the handle the way you would open the jar. The gear pulls the jaws tight onto the lid, then the lid turns.

What happens underneath

Underside of the opener: a gear between two toothed jaws
  1. Gear

Turning the handle spins this gear, which draws the toothed jaws in until they bite on the lid.

  2. Sliding jaws

Two plates that slide out for a wide lid and in for a narrow one, from 3 cm up to 9.5 cm.

  3. T handle

Long enough for a full hand grip, so you turn it with your palm rather than pinching with your fingertips.

Compared

Opener, grip pad or a tap on the worktop?

A rubber pad helps when your fingers slip. When the lid is simply too tight to move, a longer handle to turn is what shifts it.

Questions

Round screw lids from 3 to 9.5 cm across, which covers most jam, sauce, pickle and honey jars. It won't grip a flip top or a ring pull.

The toothed jaws bite into the edge of a metal lid and can leave small marks on the rim. The lid still screws back on.

Anticlockwise, the same way you would unscrew the lid by hand. The first part of the turn closes the jaws; keep turning and the lid moves with them.

One can live in the kitchen drawer and one by the preserves, or go to a parent or neighbour who struggles with jars. Both openers in a pack are the same colour.

It works best on metal screw lids with a firm edge. A thin plastic lid can flex under the jaws, so close them slowly and stop if the lid starts to bend.

Left handed and fine

Left handed here and it worked fine. You turn counterclockwise either way and the T handle sits comfortably in either hand.

Wanted bottle caps too

Thought it would open fizzy drink and beer bottle caps as well. It doesn't, it's for round screw lids on jars. Not what I wanted.

Small kitchen friendly

Our flat has a kitchen with about two drawers, so anything new has to earn its place. This is barely bigger than my palm and slips into the cutlery drawer. So far it's opened passata, pesto, a jar of olives and a jar of tahini that had been stuck shut in the cupboard for months. Gave the second one to my neighbour.

Loud lid pop

Lids come off with a loud crack. Startled the dog. Great tool though.

Clever design, solid steel jaws

Steel plate and jaws feel well made, and the handle is plastic but sturdy enough. Took two tries to get the hang of setting it flat on the lid. After that it's been perfect.

Took a couple of goes to learn

At first I tried to squeeze it like tongs and nothing happened. Then I read the steps: jaws wide, plate flat on top, hooks outside the edge, turn anticlockwise. It clicked and now it's second nature. My mum has used it on a jar of piccalilli that had been stuck for ages. Five stars from both of us.

My mom loves it

Got this for my mom after watching her struggle with a jelly jar at Thanksgiving. She says it's the most useful thing in her kitchen now. The green is a nice soft color too.

Chilli jam rescue

A jar of chilli jam I made myself had sealed so tight I'd given up on it. A slow steady turn and the lid gave way. The handle is plastic but feels sturdy.

Wish I had a third

Pair is perfect for two houses. We'd like a third for the caravan.

Fine once you get the knack

It works, but it took me a while to work out. For the first few jars I kept trying to squeeze it like a normal opener and it slipped round the lid. Once I read the instructions properly, slide the jaws wide, rest the plate flat, then turn anticlockwise, it was much better. Still not as quick as I'd hoped for my mum, who struggles with the sliding bit.
