Stand it in the saucepan, press the top, and a rubber paddle sweeps the base while you whisk the gravy or drain the veg. It runs on four AA batteries and has no lead to trail across the stovetop.

How to use it
Pull the black cap off, fit four AA batteries in the holder and push the cap back on.
Set it on its feet in the middle of the pan, then press the top to start and again to change speed.
Switch it off, lift it out by the cap and wash the legs. Keep the motor end out of the water.
Close up

Four AA cells sit in a white holder above the motor. The supplier quotes up to four hours of stirring per set.
The black cap slides over the holder. Press its top to start, press again for the next of three speeds.
Steel legs spring out from a white collar, holding the motor upright in the middle of the pan.
Soft feet stop it skating over the base, and the flat rubber paddle drags through whatever is settling there.

Fit
It needs a flat base to stand on and enough depth to stay upright. The motor end must stay well above the sauce.
It stands about 7.5 in (19 cm) tall on its feet. Fill a pot no higher than the white collar.
Compared
A spoon is still better for scraping the corners and tasting as you go. The stirrer is for the minutes you'd otherwise stand guard.

Not for long. It keeps the base moving, but stay in the kitchen and keep the heat low, as you would with any pan on the stovetop.
It is made for sauces, custard, porridge and soup. Very stiff mixtures such as mashed potato or bread dough will stall it.
Anything that catches if you stop stirring for a minute: custard, béchamel, porridge, polenta, risotto in its last stage, gravy and thick soups.
The parts that touch the pan are rubber feet and a rubber paddle, not bare metal. Still check the feet now and then for grit stuck to them.
No. It takes four AA batteries, which go into the white holder under the black cap. Fit them before you start cooking.

Sample, not realCooking for me and flatmates on one hob. This keeps the pasta sauce moving while I do the garlic bread. Light and easy to wash, and takes up barely any room.

Sample, not realGave this to my dad who loves cooking but gets tired standing at the stove. He uses it for his chilli base and porridge. He phoned to say it was the best present he had that year.

Sample, not realPureed soup spits when it's thick. Medium speed kept it steady, and I stayed close.

Sample, not realBread sauce is always the one that catches on Christmas Day. This kept it moving on the lowest speed while I dealt with the sprouts. Very pleased.

Sample, not realWe use it on a single ring stove in the van for porridge and soup. Battery powered so no plug needed, which is the whole point. Pops apart for a quick wash, and stores in the cupboard without taking space. Don't leave it unattended in a van, obviously, but it's a real help with the morning routine.

Sample, not realI make a lot of stiff mixtures and thick stews and it just stalled. Fair enough for sauces and soup, but not what I cook.
