Most of us cook too much spaghetti, because a dry bundle is hard to judge by eye. Set this to the number of people eating, fill the opening, and the guessing stops.

How to use it
Turn the green lever until it points at how many people you are cooking for.
Push dry spaghetti through the hole until it is packed snugly from edge to edge.
Lift the bundle out and into the boiling water. Open the lever to release the last strands.
Close up

Curved green leaves overlap like a camera aperture. They close in from all sides, so the hole stays roughly round at every setting.
Numbers 1 to 4 are moulded into the white ring. Line the lever up with one and the opening is set.
Moves the leaves. Push it round to open wider for more people, back for fewer.
| Setting | Who it feeds |
|---|---|
| 1 | One adult main |
| 2 | Two adults |
| 3 | Three adults |
| 4 | Four adults |
The supplier gives no gram weights for each setting. Appetites vary, so try a setting once and adjust next time.
Compared
Kitchen scales are the most exact, but they mean getting them out for one job. A hand is free and always there, but no two hands match.
| Compared | This productThis measurer | Kitchen scales | By eye |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same amount every time | Yes | Yes | No |
| Works with long pasta | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Works with penne or fusilli | No | Yes | Yes |
| Lives in the pasta drawer | Yes | No | Yes |
It comes as a pair, which is what makes the price fair. Keep one by the pasta jar and the other in a second kitchen, or give it away. Both are identical.
It measures long, straight pasta: spaghetti, linguine, bucatini. Short shapes like penne need a scale or a cup instead.
Many UK packs suggest somewhere between 75 and 3.5 oz (100 g) of dry spaghetti per adult. The 1 setting gives a single bundle; weigh it once if you want to know what that means in grams for your brand.
It works for any long, dry, straight strands: linguine, bucatini, soba or rice sticks. Nests of egg noodles do not fit through the opening.
About 8 by 3.5 in (9 cm) and 0.4 in (1 cm) thick including the lever, so both measurers slide into a cutlery drawer or stand in the pasta jar.

Sample, not realCook for one after the gym and set it to 1. Not too much, not too little, and I know what I'm eating.

Sample, not realWorks, but I only cook long pasta a couple of times a month so the pair is too many for me. Perfectly good, just not the right fit for my habits.

Sample, not realOne lives at home and one goes in the bag when we rent a cottage. Never have to guess a strange kitchen's pasta.

Sample, not realBatch cooking spaghetti on a Sunday for the week's lunches used to be guesswork. Now I set it to 4, push it through, and each bundle is the same. Portions in the tubs are even and I am not throwing any away.
