Meat Masher and Mince Chopper

$11.99

A wooden spoon pushes a block of cold mince around the pan for five minutes and still leaves lumps. The fanned blades on this tool cut through it in a few presses.

Breaking up a block of mince with onion in a frying pan

How to use it

Even crumbs in three steps

  1. 01

    Brown the block

Put the mince in a hot pan and leave it for a minute to start colouring.

  2. 02

    Press and twist

Push the blades into the meat and give a quarter turn. Repeat across the pan.

  3. 03

    Keep stirring

Use the flat sides to turn the crumbs until they are cooked through.

  1. Curved blades

Several nylon blades fan out from the center. Pressed down and turned, they slice through a pack of mince rather than just squashing it.

  2. Collar

A raised ring between the shaft and the handle gives your thumb a stop, so your grip does not slide towards the pan.

  3. Handle

The whole tool is 11 in (28 cm) long, which keeps your hand above the spitting fat while the meat browns.

Compared

Masher, spoon or spatula?

You still want a spoon for stirring in the sauce. This is the tool for the first few minutes, while the meat is one solid lump.

Questions

No. It is nylon, so take it out between stirs and rest it on a spoon rest, not on the hot rim.

Cooked potatoes, avocado, tinned tomatoes and soft berries. It is too light for raw root vegetables.

Yes. It works the same way on any raw mince: press the blades in, turn them, and repeat until the clumps have broken up.

All three are the same tool in black, dark green or deep red. The photos are the colors as they arrive.

Red one looks cheery

Chose the red and it looks cheerful hanging by the cooker. Works brilliantly on beef mince for my mince and tatties.

Lasagne ragu in half the time

Making a big ragu for lasagne used to mean ten minutes of prodding at stubborn lumps of mince while it caught on the base of the pan. Press, twist, repeat, and the whole pan is fine crumbs within a couple of minutes. The layers came out so much neater too, because there were no great clumps of meat sliding about in the sauce. Wish I had found this years ago.

Slightly long for my small pan

Great tool, but in my small saucepan the handle sticks out a long way and I have to watch where it ends up.

Little pan, big result

My pan is only small but there is plenty of room to press and twist the blades. Mince is fine and even every time.

So much better than a spatula

My spatula just pushed the meat around the skillet. These curved blades actually cut through it. Ground beef for chili was done in minutes.

Better than the fork I used to use for this.

Better for pasta bake

Pasta bake with mince now has a smoother sauce, because the meat is in small pieces rather than big lumps. My partner noticed before I said anything. Even the fussy eater at home cleared the dish, which is saying something in this house.
