Picking shell off a boiled egg one fleck at a time is slow and tears the white. This cup cracks the whole shell at once, so it comes away in a few large pieces.

1
Cap with drain holes
A ring of small holes in the cap lets the water out when you tip the cup over the sink.
2
Diamond ridges
Raised points moulded into the clear wall. As the egg bounces, they crack the shell into a fine web.
3
Base cap
The second cap closes the bottom, so the egg has room to tumble end over end.

Shaking versus picking
The cup does one egg at a time, so for a dozen devilled eggs a bowl of iced water and patience may be just as quick.

Questions
Less well. The membrane on a very fresh egg clings to the white, so the shell cracks but needs more picking off. Eggs a week or so old peel most cleanly.
Cool the egg in cold water first. The supplier gives no heat rating for the clear body, and a cooled egg peels better anyway.
Quail eggs are too small for the ridges to reach and just rattle around. A large duck egg may not fit at all. It is shaped for a standard hen's egg.
Yes, about a tablespoon. The water cushions the egg and gets under the membrane, which is what lets the cracked shell slide off rather than stick.

Keto lunches
Eating a lot of boiled eggs these days and peeling was starting to bug me. This cuts it down to seconds per egg. Cool the egg first and add a tablespoon of water, that is all there is to it. I boil six at a time, peel them one by one in the cup, and have lunches sorted for the week without any of the old fiddling.
Scotch eggs start with a perfectly peeled egg and mine always had chunks missing. This gives me a smooth egg every time, as long as I give it a proper shake. Cooled them in cold water first like the tips say.
Our kitchen is tiny so I am picky about gadgets. This is just a little cup that sits at the back of a cupboard and it has earned its place. Boiled eggs for my breakfast toast are no longer a faff, and I can see the shell cracking through the clear body which is oddly satisfying.
Did the egg sandwiches for my cousin's wedding tea and ended up with about thirty eggs to peel the night before. I put a bit of water in, shook each one, and the shells came off in big bits. It took maybe twenty minutes in total with the cooling in between. My hands were not pruney or sore at all. A real help.
