It's 10.8 in (27.5 cm) long, so it covers the side you pour from rather than the whole rim.

Strainer or colander?
A colander is still the thing for rinsing salad. For draining a hot pan, the strainer means less lifting and less washing up.

Questions
If the pot is round and has a lip for the clips to hook over, yes. Square dishes and pans with a thick, flat edge won't hold it firmly.
Yes. Hold both handles and tip slowly, so the two clips share the weight as the water runs out.
Draining boiling water is its job. Clip it on when you drain rather than leaving it on the pan while it cooks, because the frame is plastic.
Yes, if the pan has a lip. Let the fat cool a little first, then pour it slowly into a heatproof container, never down the sink.
Hold a mug under the lip as you start to tip. The water comes through the slots slowly enough to catch a splash, which a colander never allows.

Skeptical at first
Honestly thought this would be one of those gadgets that ends up in the junk drawer. It's the opposite. I use it for pasta, potatoes, green beans, even blanching broccoli. The silicone bends enough to fit my 3 different pots and the clips actually stay put. Only thing to know is it won't sit on a square pan, which the description does say. Folds flat and goes right in the dishwasher.
My dad has arthritis in his hands and lifting a heavy pan to pour into a colander was getting tricky for him. With this he clips it on, rests the pan on the edge of the sink and tips it slowly with both hands. He says it feels a lot steadier. The clips do need a firm press to get on, but once they're on they don't budge.
Excellent for pasta and veg. Tiny grains like orzo can find the edge, so I'm careful with those. Still the first thing I grab for spaghetti, and it's easy to clean afterwards.
