What real bogwood does
Genuine aquarium wood leaches tannins for weeks, turning the water a light tea colour. Many soft-water species prefer that and it is harmless, but it is not what everyone wants in a display tank. Real wood also floats until it is fully waterlogged, which can mean a fortnight in a bucket before it can be used.
Resin has neither behaviour. It sinks immediately and it is inert, so the water stays clear from the first day and nothing changes over the following month. What you give up is the mild acidifying effect real wood has, which matters if you were relying on it to soften your water.
Hollow is the useful part
Plenty of ornaments look like wood and are solid, which makes them scenery. Openings running right through the trunk turn this into shelter, and shelter is a functional requirement rather than decoration. Fish that cannot get out of sight stay stressed, and stressed fish colour down and pick up disease more readily.
It suits bottom dwellers particularly. Corydoras, loaches and small catfish spend the day under something, and a passage they can enter from either end is far more use than a cave with a single dead-end opening. Check the openings are large enough for the widest fish that might try to use them.
Placement and scaping
At roughly seventeen centimetres it is a mid-ground piece rather than a centrepiece in anything but a nano tank. Angling it rather than laying it flat looks considerably more natural, since wood in a river rarely lies parallel to the substrate, and it also creates a shaded space underneath.
Push the base into the substrate slightly so it sits rather than perches. Java moss and Anubias both attach to resin readily with thread or glue, and a piece with a little planting on it after a few months stops reading as an ornament and starts reading as part of the scape.
