A lint roller lifts what is sitting on the surface. Hair that has worked down into a weave is held by the fibres themselves, and adhesive never reaches it, which is why a sofa looks clean after rolling and sheds again the moment somebody sits down.
It works by dragging, not sticking
Short strokes in one direction let the serrations comb into the pile and gather the trapped hair into a ridge at the edge of the stroke. Lift the ridge off by hand. Working back and forth undoes the ridge you have just built, which is the mistake most people make first.

Opposite ends of the same problem. The glove takes loose coat off the animal before it drops; this takes it out of the furniture once it has. Doing the first properly means much less of the second.
On woven upholstery, rugs and canvas, no. Keep it off leather, silk, loose-knit throws and anything with a long pile that can be pulled, and test a hidden corner on anything you are unsure about.
It gathers into a ridge at the edge of your stroke rather than staying on the tool. Pick that up by hand and bin it. If hair packs into the serrations, rinse it under a tap and let it dry.
On sturdy fabrics like denim and canvas, yes. On knitwear and suiting a lint roller is the safer choice, because the serrations are made to grip fibres and fine weaves do not want to be gripped.
