Pumpkin Print Dress

Open underneath, which is the whole idea.

A halter dress fastens across the chest and hangs free from there. Almost nothing is worn, and the volume in the photograph comes from a mesh layer rather than from anything wrapped around the animal.

Why you'll love it

Made for happy, healthy pets

Only the front half is worn

The dress fastens over the chest and shoulders and the skirt hangs loose from there. Nothing wraps a leg, nothing passes under the belly and the hindquarters are completely free, which puts it near the bandana for how little it asks.

The skirt gives it volume

A mesh layer under the satin keeps the skirt standing out rather than clinging. In a photograph that is what separates a dress from a printed coat.

A proper chart

The supplier publishes neck, chest and length for all four sizes, so this is one of the items here you can size properly rather than guessing from a breed name.

Good fit if

  • Animals that accept a chest strap but nothing else
  • Photographs where the outfit needs shape and movement
  • Anyone who wants a chart with three real measurements
  • Cats and small dogs up to a 55cm chest

Look elsewhere if

  • Your dog is very short in the leg
  • You wanted warmth as well as decoration
  • Stairs are involved and nobody is watching

Where the volume comes from

The skirt has a mesh layer gathered underneath the satin. That is the whole trick: mesh holds air and keeps the outer fabric standing away from the body, so the dress reads as a dress rather than as a printed coat clinging to the animal's sides.

It is also why it photographs in motion. A gathered skirt over mesh swings and settles, and a picture taken mid-step looks like a costume rather than a garment lying flat.

Almost nothing is actually worn

Count the contact: a band over the shoulders and around the chest, and that is it. No leg passes through anything, nothing crosses the belly, the hindquarters are open and there is nothing near the head. On the scale that runs from a bandana to a four-leg suit, this sits close to the bandana end while looking like the opposite.

That combination is unusual and it is the reason to choose this over a full costume for an animal you are unsure about. The photograph is elaborate; the experience for the pet is a chest strap.

The hem is the thing to watch

A loose skirt is the one hazard this design introduces, and it is a real one on a short-legged dog. The hem sits clear of the back feet on most animals, but on a dachshund or a corgi it brushes the floor, and a hem underfoot on a staircase is how a costume causes a fall rather than a photograph.

Stand the animal up and look at the gap between the hem and the floor before you go anywhere. If there is not a clear couple of centimetres, keep the dress to one room and to level ground.

Satin, mesh and water

Hand wash cool and hang it to dry. The mesh is what gives the skirt its shape and it is the part that suffers: wringing it out crushes the gathers permanently and they do not recover with pressing.

Squeeze the water out between two towels instead, then hang the dress by the shoulders so the skirt falls under its own weight while it dries. It will come back to shape on its own.

Three real measurements per size, which is more than most of this range publishes. Check the neck first, since a halter hangs from it, then the chest. Length is the figure that decides whether the hem clears the floor on a short-legged dog, so compare it against your animal rather than treating it as coverage alone.

Good questions

Before you buy

It hangs clear of the back legs on a standing animal. On a very short-legged dog the hem brushes the floor, which is worth checking before letting them go up and down stairs in it.

It is stitched at the waist rather than tied, so it stays put and cannot be pulled off and swallowed. It also cannot be removed if you would rather do without it.

Not at all. Satin and mesh over an open underside is a summer weight, so this is a costume rather than a layer. In a cold room put a jumper on instead.

No, it is stitched at the waist. That means it cannot be pulled off and swallowed, which is the trade for not being able to leave it off if you would rather.

Some will, because a halter over the shoulders is close to a harness and cats accept those more readily than sleeves. The skirt is the part they notice, so expect a few minutes of consideration first.
