Reflective versus emissive

The distinction matters more than most people realise. Reflective material has no light of its own: it returns light that hits it, so it becomes visible only once a vehicle's headlights are pointed at the dog. On a bend, at a junction, or to a cyclist with a dim front lamp, that can be far too late.

A lit collar puts out light regardless of what anyone else is doing. A driver approaching a bend sees a moving point of light before the headlights have swung round, which converts a couple of seconds of warning into ten or fifteen. On an unlit lane with no pavement, that is the whole safety argument.

Choosing a mode

Steady is the most readable at distance and the easiest for a driver to judge speed and direction from, which makes it the sensible default on roads. Slow flash draws the eye more strongly in cluttered environments where a steady light might be lost among street lighting and shop windows.

Fast flash is the most attention-grabbing and the most tiring to look at, and it is genuinely useful for tracking a dog across a dark field, where you are trying to pick out movement rather than be seen. It also draws the most current, so expect a shorter run time when you use it.

Charging, fit and weather

USB charging is the right decision for something used seasonally. Coin cells always seem to die on the first genuinely dark morning of the year, whereas a rechargeable collar can be topped up alongside a phone. Charge it at the start of the week during winter and it is simply ready.

It cuts to size, which is worth doing properly rather than leaving a long tail flapping. Measure the neck, allow the two-finger clearance, and trim. It handles rain and wet grass without complaint, though it is splash resistant rather than submersible, so a dog that swims should have it taken off first.
