Most messes are not water-change messes
One uneaten pellet or a single dropping does not justify hauling out a siphon and a bucket. Thirty seconds with a bulb and it is gone, and the water level never moves.
Precision where a siphon is a blunt tool
In a planted tank or a shrimp tank, a gravel vacuum tears up carpet and sucks up shrimplets. A narrow tube takes the one thing you are aiming at.
It feeds as well as it cleans
The same bulb places frozen or liquid food exactly where a shy fish or a coral sits, instead of scattering it across the surface for the greedy ones.

Uneaten food is the main use
Food that is not eaten sinks, breaks down and produces ammonia in exactly the way fish waste does. In a small tank a single uneaten pellet left for a day contributes a measurable amount, and it is entirely avoidable if you can lift it out within a few minutes of feeding.
A siphon is the wrong tool for that. It removes water you did not intend to remove and disturbs a wide area to get one pellet. A bulb draws a precise small volume from exactly where you point it, which is the whole point of having one.
Shrimp and nano tanks
In a shrimp tank a standard siphon is genuinely hazardous, because shrimplets are small enough to be pulled up the tube and are difficult to see going. A bulb gives you control over the suction and lets you watch what is entering it, so you can stop the moment something moves.
Nano tanks have the same problem for a different reason. Removing twenty percent of a fifteen-litre tank is three litres, and a siphon takes that faster than you can work. Being able to do detail work without the water level dropping is what makes a bulb useful there.
Technique and length
Squeeze the bulb before the tube enters the water, position the end just above the target, then release slowly. Releasing sharply creates a rush that scatters what you were aiming at and stirs up a cloud of detritus, which leaves you with a cloudy tank and the pellet still there.
Choose the length by tank depth. Twenty-eight centimetres suits nano and small tanks; forty-five covers a standard setup without you leaning over the rim. Calibration marks on the barrel are genuinely useful when the bulb is doubling as a dosing tool for liquid food.
It is also worth using immediately after feeding rather than waiting until the evening. Food that has sat for hours has already started to break down and has usually been pushed into the substrate by the filter flow, at which point a bulb cannot reach it and the nutrients are in the water regardless.

Pick on tank depth plus the rim you reach over. A tube that is slightly too long is manageable; one that is too short means putting your hand in the water, which defeats the purpose.
Rinsing
Flush it with clean water immediately after use by drawing and expelling several times. Waste left inside a bulb decomposes in a sealed damp space, and the smell when you next squeeze it is memorable. The inside of the bulb is the part you cannot reach with a brush.
Store it with the bulb compressed and the tube pointing down so any remaining water drains rather than sitting inside. If you use the same bulb for dosing liquid food, rinse thoroughly between uses, and keep a separate one if you dose anything you would not want reaching the substrate.
