3-in-1 Egg Slicer

$18.99

Slicing a boiled egg with a knife crumbles the yolk and leaves uneven rounds. Wires pass through in one press, and this one has three frames, so you choose halves, wedges or slices.

Slicing a boiled egg in the black egg slicer

How to use it

Peel, press, plate

  1. 01

    Peel and drop it in

Stand a peeled, cooled boiled egg in the black cup, pointed end up.

  2. 02

    Pick a frame and press

Blue halves it, yellow cuts wedges, red slices it. Press the frame down through the egg in one firm push.

  3. 03

    Lift it out

Tip the cut egg onto the plate or bread and rinse the wires under the tap.

Three frames, one cup

Kindral 3 in 1 egg slicer in black with blue, yellow and red frames
  1. Blue frame

Sits on top of the stack. Its single wire cuts the egg in half for devilled eggs or a ramen bowl.

  2. Stainless wires

Each frame carries its own set: crossed wires on the yellow one for wedges, parallel wires on the red one for slices.

  3. Base cup

The black cup cradles the egg and has slots for the wires to pass into, so the cut goes right through to the bottom.

Compared

Wires or a knife?

A sharp knife is fine for one egg. For a tray of egg mayonnaise sandwiches or a salad for six, the wires are quicker and every slice matches.

Questions

With a fully cooled, hard boiled egg, yes. A soft or warm yolk smears on the wires, so chill the eggs in cold water first.

Soft things a wire goes through easily, like strawberries, mushrooms and mozzarella. Not hard vegetables.

The egg is still warm or slightly soft in the middle. Cook it for ten minutes, cool it in cold water for five, then peel and slice.

The red one. It has the most wires and cuts the egg into even rounds that lie flat on buttered bread.

Clean wires, clean cuts

Something about the wires being stainless makes me trust it to last. Six months in and they are still tight and straight.

Does what it should

Slices eggs and mushrooms nicely. Knocked off a star because it won't do harder stuff like radishes, but that's on me for trying.

Brunch for ten

Hosted brunch and had a platter of sliced eggs, smoked salmon and bagels. The slicer saved me a good fifteen minutes and every slice matched, which looked far smarter than my knife work usually does. People kept asking how I did it. I told them the cup does the work and the eggs just need to be properly cold first.

Chill the eggs first

Top tip from someone who learned the hard way: let the eggs sit in cold water until they're properly cold. Warm ones smear on the wires. Cold ones slice perfectly.

Replaced my old one

My last slicer had wires that bent after a few months and one snapped altogether. These feel tight and stainless, and the three frames mean I can do wedges as well as slices. Chilled eggs go through perfectly, and I give it a quick rinse under the tap afterwards. It sits in the drawer ready, and I have not looked back at the old one at all.

Very good, one quibble

Use it a few times a week for salads and sandwiches. Halves and slices are spot on. The wedges are the only thing that sometimes come out a bit uneven, I think if the egg isn't sat dead centre the yellow frame catches it slightly to one side. Standing it pointed end up like the instructions say mostly fixes it. Still glad I bought it.

Takes a little practice

Took me a couple tries to figure out the right amount of pressure. Go too slow and the egg kind of rolls, one quick firm push and it's perfect. Now I do a dozen in a few minutes for my weekday salads. Four stars because the learning curve was a bit annoying at first, but once you have it, it's great.

Neater than my knife skills

Slices come out the same thickness every time, which matters to me more than it should. Egg on toast looks like it came from a cafe now.

Great for my mom

Mom has weak hands and gave up on slicing eggs by knife years ago. She holds the cup, pushes the frame down, and gets a plate of slices without any trouble. She told me it was the best thing I ever sent her, and she has started making egg salad again for the first time in ages. Worth it just for that.

Bought for my mum

My mum has arthritis in both hands and had more or less given up on egg sandwiches because holding a knife steady on something that small was a struggle. She stands the egg in the cup, presses the red frame down with the flat of her palm and that's it. She rang me specially to say how pleased she was. Small thing but it's made her lunches so much easier.
