Y Peeler with Beech Handle

£8.99

The blade sits crossways at the top of the handle, so you draw it towards you like a razor. That suits round, wide food: potatoes, apples, butternut squash and big carrots.

  • Stainless steel swivel blade
  • Beech handle
  • 19 cm long, about 50 g
  • Hanging hole in the handle
The Y peeler taking the skin off a potato

How to use it

Thin skin, fast

  1. 01

    Grip the handle

Hold the beech handle and set the blade flat against the skin at the far end of the vegetable.

  2. 02

    Pull it towards you

Draw the blade down the length in one stroke. It swivels to follow the curve, so the strip stays thin.

  3. 03

    Rinse and hang it up

Wash it by hand, dry the beech handle and hang it from the hole in the end.

Close up

Built around one wide blade

Kindral Y peeler, 19 cm long and 8.5 cm across the blade
  1. Swivel blade

Stainless steel, spanning most of the 8.5 cm head, on a pivot. It tilts to follow the curve of a potato so the strip stays even.

  2. White head

The flared head holds both ends of the blade and gives your thumb something to brace against.

  3. Beech handle

Light wood with a rounded end. About 50 g in total, so a whole bag of potatoes is not tiring.

  4. Hanging hole

A slot through the end of the handle for a hook or a utensil rail.

Questions

The Y is easier on round, wide things like potatoes and apples because you pull it towards you. The straight one suits long, thin vegetables like carrots and cucumbers.

Wash it by hand. The handle is beech, and wood that sits wet in a dishwasher can crack and fade.

Yes. The blade is centred on the handle and swivels both ways, so it works the same in either hand.

The wide blade is good for courgette or carrot ribbons. Lay the vegetable flat on a board and pull along its length, pressing lightly.

No guard is included. Store it hanging up or in a drawer slot so the blade does not rub against other tools.

Student kitchen approved

Got this for uni because the shared kitchen had one blunt peeler that nobody ever washed. Mine lives in my room now. Use it for carrots, potatoes and the odd apple and it hasn't let me down once. It's light but the blade is sharp and it glides through the skin. Rinse, dry the handle, hang it on the little hook above my desk. Simple.

A good swap for the old one

The old peeler skipped and left patches. This one follows the potato properly and I finish in half the time.

Sunday meal prep helper

Sundays I peel a big batch of carrots and potatoes for the week. This cut my prep time down a lot ngl. The swivel blade does most of the work.

Good, needs a bit of practice

Took a day to get used to the pull motion. Now I'm quicker than before.

Beats the ones with the plastic handle

Plastic handle peelers feel slippery when wet. The beech handle has a better grip.

Thanksgiving prep is easier

Peeled sweet potatoes and russets for Thanksgiving with this and it was quick work.

Wrong shape for my cooking

The Y shape is awkward for the long vegetables I mostly peel, zucchini and carrots. Blade is fine but I keep turning the vegetable around to find an angle. Should have gone with the straight one.

Spud duty

On spud duty most nights with four kids. Fast and comfortable. Between the roast, mash, chips and the school lunches, I'm at the sink with a peeler almost every night. This is the first one I haven't wanted to throw across the room.

Apple duty for my daughter

My 9 year old can use this one. Pulling towards you just makes more sense to her than my old straight one did, and she's on apple duty for every pie now.

Great peeler, small handle

My hands are on the bigger side and the handle is a little short for me, but the peeler works well.
