Pineapple Corer and Slicer

R219.99

Cutting a pineapple with a knife means trimming skin, digging out eyes and losing fruit to both. A pineapple corer lifts the flesh out of the shell in one spiral and leaves the core in place.

Twisting the black corer down into a pineapple

How to use it

Top, twist, lift

  1. 01

    Cut off the top

Slice the crown off about 2 cm below the leaves so the flat top of the fruit shows.

  2. 02

    Twist down

Centre the corer over the core, press and turn the handle clockwise until the blade nears the base. Stop before it cuts through the bottom.

  3. 03

    Lift and slide off

Pull straight up. The fruit comes out in a spiral on the tube; slide it off or cut along one side for rings.

What each part does

Kindral pineapple corer and slicer in black, standing in a cored pineapple
  1. Handle

A wide T grip, so you can turn it with the whole hand as the blade works down.

  2. Core tube

The 3 cm steel tube cuts round the woody centre and leaves it standing in the shell.

  3. Ring blade

A serrated ring 8.5 cm across, set at an angle, so each turn cuts one more ring of the spiral.

Compared

Corer or knife?

A knife wastes less on a very small or oddly shaped pineapple. On an average fruit the corer is quicker, and the rings come out even.

Fruit wider than the 8.5 cm blade leaves a layer of flesh in the shell. Scrape it out with a spoon for smoothies.

Questions

The blade cuts an 8.5 cm cylinder of fruit. On a pineapple narrower than about 10 cm it reaches the skin, so some slices come out with a rind edge to trim off.

It does not peel the outside. It lifts the flesh out of the skin in one piece, leaving the shell behind, which you can use as a bowl.

Hold the corer upright over a board and slide the spiral down off the tube with your other hand. Cut once down one side of the spiral to get separate rings.

The black corer has a curved grip; the yellow and green ones have a flat T handle. The supplier lists the same 18 cm height, tube and blade for all three, so pick the grip you prefer.

Student flat favourite

Pineapple is my one healthy habit and this makes it actually doable in a tiny shared kitchen. Hardly any board space needed, just a plate underneath to catch the drips.

Very good, a touch large

Great tool. It's a big gadget for a small drawer, but it earns its place.

Rings for gammon

Cut down one side of the spiral and you get proper rings for gammon and pineapple, which my husband was very happy about since he's been asking for it for months. Much nicer than the tinned rings and they hold together well under the grill. Kept the leftover chunks in the shell in the fridge with cling film over the top for the next day.

Hated cutting pineapple, loved this

Pineapples used to sit in the fruit bowl until they went off because I couldn't be bothered. Not anymore. The bowl was a graveyard of rotting fruit I felt guilty about. Now I buy one on Friday, twist it out on Saturday morning, and we've eaten the lot by Monday. Wish I'd tried one years ago.

Pina colada night

Made pina coladas for a hen do and this got through four pineapples in no time. Saved the shells and served the drinks in them, which went down a storm.

Pineapple chicken

Made sweet and sour chicken with fresh pineapple. Chunks cut from the spiral were the right size.
