Tahini for hummus
Use a lot of tahini for hummus and the separation drove me mad. This sorts it right to the bottom of the jar.

Natural peanut butter has no stabiliser, so the oil floats to the top and the paste at the bottom sets solid. A knife only stirs the top third. This rod gets to the base.

How to use it
Open the jar, push the curved end down through the oil to the bottom.
Hold the jar and turn the top hook in circles until the colour is even all the way down.
Pull the rod up through the hole in the scraper plate so the butter stays in the jar.
Close up

The top end bends into a hook you hold and turn in circles, like the handle of a hand drill.
The rod zigzags across 5 cm, so each turn drags paste from the wall of the jar into the middle.
A flat 7 Γ 3 cm steel plate with a hole. Pull the rod up through it and the butter is wiped back into the jar.
Compared
A knife will do if you stir every time you open the jar. Leave it a week and the bottom turns to clay.
| Compared | This productStirrer | Butter knife | Storing upside down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaches the bottom | Yes | No | Partly |
| Oil spills | Rarely | Often | Leaky lids drip |
| Mess on your hands | Wiped by the plate | Up the handle | None |
| Time for a full jar | About a minute | Several minutes | Days |
The rod is 18 cm long and 5 cm across, so it suits most standard jars of peanut or almond butter. A jar with a neck narrower than 5 cm will not take it.
Yes, anything that separates: tahini, almond butter, cashew butter, even thick sauces that settle. Clean it between jars.
Keep the jar in the fridge after a thorough stir. Cold paste stays blended for weeks, though it will be stiffer to spread straight from the shelf.
We sell it as a hand tool and the supplier does not say it fits a drill chuck or mixer, so we don't recommend trying.

My husband eats peanut butter on everything and he's been complaining about stirring the natural kind for years. I got him this as a stocking stuffer and he laughed, then used it the next morning and hasn't stopped talking about it. It's solid stainless steel, a nice weight, and turning the hook is oddly satisfying. He uses it on his almond butter too.

Used to dread opening a new jar. Cranking is far easier on the arm.

Does what it says, but don't expect it to be instant. A full jar of natural peanut butter with a thick oil layer takes me a good couple of minutes of cranking to get it even. That's still quicker and much tidier than a knife, so I'm happy. Just knocked a star because my arm notices it on a fresh jar.

The bottom third of the jar used to be a dry clump I'd end up throwing out. This mixes all the way down. Crank it a few turns and done.

I bake peanut butter biscuits and blondies most weekends and need the jar properly mixed, or the bakes come out greasy on one tray and dry on the next. This gets the whole jar even in a couple of minutes, and the scraper plate means I'm not losing half of it on the rod. Very happy with it.

Always binned the last inch of the jar because it was concrete. Not anymore.

Tahini separates into oil and sludge. Few turns and it's smooth.
