Stays in the drawer
Flat enough to slide into the utensil drawer with everything else.

Most of us cook too much spaghetti, because a dry bundle is hard to judge by eye. Set this to the number of people eating, fill the opening, and the guessing stops.

How to use it
Turn the green lever until it points at how many people you are cooking for.
Push dry spaghetti through the hole until it is packed snugly from edge to edge.
Lift the bundle out and into the boiling water. Open the lever to release the last strands.
Close up

Curved green leaves overlap like a camera aperture. They close in from all sides, so the hole stays roughly round at every setting.
Numbers 1 to 4 are moulded into the white ring. Line the lever up with one and the opening is set.
Moves the leaves. Push it round to open wider for more people, back for fewer.
| Setting | Who it feeds |
|---|---|
| 1 | One adult main |
| 2 | Two adults |
| 3 | Three adults |
| 4 | Four adults |
The supplier gives no gram weights for each setting. Appetites vary, so try a setting once and adjust next time.
Compared
Kitchen scales are the most exact, but they mean getting them out for one job. A hand is free and always there, but no two hands match.
| Compared | This productThis measurer | Kitchen scales | By eye |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same amount every time | Yes | Yes | No |
| Works with long pasta | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Works with penne or fusilli | No | Yes | Yes |
| Lives in the pasta drawer | Yes | No | Yes |
It comes as a pair, which is what makes the price fair. Keep one by the pasta jar and the other in a second kitchen, or give it away. Both are identical.
It measures long, straight pasta: spaghetti, linguine, bucatini. Short shapes like penne need a scale or a cup instead.
Many UK packs suggest somewhere between 75 and 100 g of dry spaghetti per adult. The 1 setting gives a single bundle; weigh it once if you want to know what that means in grams for your brand.
It works for any long, dry, straight strands: linguine, bucatini, soba or rice sticks. Nests of egg noodles do not fit through the opening.
About 8 by 9 cm and 1 cm thick including the lever, so both measurers slide into a cutlery drawer or stand in the pasta jar.

Cooking for one and always overdoing the pasta. Dial to 1 and I get a sensible amount of spaghetti. Tonight I did aglio e olio with exactly enough.

Used it for bucatini and it was perfect. I'll try it on linguine next.

The trick is to fill the hole snugly from edge to edge, like the how to says. Do that and every portion is the same. I weighed a couple out of curiosity and they were close, which is good enough for me.

My dad is on his own since mum passed and he was always making far too much. Set to 1 and 2 now. He keeps one next to the pasta and gave the spare one to my brother. Easy for him to turn, even with his stiff hands.

Dad's Bolognese Friday and he used to cook for twelve. Setting 3 and no more leftovers in the fridge.

Honestly I just prefer weighing it on the scales. It sits in the drawer.

Always cooking for one and always over doing it. Not now.

My dad lives alone and cooks for himself most nights. He'd often make enough for three, and then not want it reheated. I gave him one of these and showed him the numbers. Now he sets it to 1 or 2 and it's just right. He's told the neighbours about it, so I might be ordering another pack.

Thicker spaghetti is harder to push through in bulk. Normal spaghetti is easy.
