Silicone Garlic Peeler, Set of 3

R199.99

Picking papery skin off cloves with a fingernail is the slowest part of most recipes. Roll them in one of these tubes for a few seconds and the skins crack off, while your fingers stay clean.

How to use it

Peeled garlic in three moves

  1. 01

    Drop in the cloves

Break the bulb and put two or three unpeeled cloves into the tube.

  2. 02

    Roll it

Press the tube flat under your palm and roll it back and forth on the board a few times.

  3. 03

    Tip them out

Tip out the peeled cloves, then shake the loose skins into the bin.

Why a plain tube works

Garlic peeler measurements: 13.5 cm long, 3.5 cm across
  1. Grippy silicone wall

Pressing and rolling drags the inside wall against each clove. The skin grips the silicone and splits away.

  2. 13.5 cm long

Room for two or three cloves side by side, short enough to roll under one flat hand.

  3. 3.5 cm across

Wide enough for a fat clove from a big bulb. Tiny inner ones rattle about and may need an extra roll.

Compared

Tube or knife?

Crushing a clove under the flat of a knife is quick when you want it crushed anyway. The tube is for garlic you want whole, to slice or roast.

Questions

Best on dry bulbs. Very fresh or damp garlic peels more slowly; give it a few more rolls.

Keep one by the hob, one in the drawer and one to give away, or use two at once for a big batch.

Two or three average ones per tube. Pack it fuller and they can't move enough against the wall to split their skins.

Break the bulb into cloves first. A whole head won't fit inside a 3.5 cm tube, but three tubes, three at a time, get through most of one.

Better than I thought

Honestly thought it would be a gimmick. A few firm rolls and the cloves are naked. Quick wash and it's ready again.

Good idea, slightly long

13.5 cm is fine in most drawers but mine is shallow and it sits at an angle. Works great.

Pretty handy

Works well. Tiny cloves sometimes need a second try.

Roast garlic heaven

Did a whole bulb for a roast chicken in a couple of goes. Quicker than picking at each one with my nails.

Okay for big cloves only

Big cloves come out clean every time. The small inner cloves are a different story, they rattle around in the tube without enough pressure on them and stay mostly wrapped. Most heads I buy have a bunch of small cloves in the middle, so I'm still peeling about half by hand. Not bad, just not the fix I wanted.

Good gift

Gave one of the three to my neighbour who's always borrowing garlic, now she's borrowing this instead. Works brilliantly.

Quick pasta Tuesday

Spaghetti aglio e olio needs plenty of garlic. Peeled it in half a minute, no fuss.

Fits in the drawer

Small enough to slot into the cutlery drawer, which in my flat is the only drawer. Peels a couple of cloves in a few seconds.
