Avocado Slicer and Pit Remover, Pair

R199.99

Most avocado accidents happen when a knife slips off the stone. This tool takes the knife out of the job: a plastic edge to split it, a ring to lift the stone, a grid to slice.

  • Two tools in the pack
  • Serrated scoop splits the skin
  • Slicing grid cuts a half in one pass
  • Folds to 12.7 cm
The slicing grid pressed through an avocado half

How to use it

Ripe avocado to sliced in three moves

  1. 01

    Split it

Draw the serrated edge of the scoop round the avocado, then twist the halves apart.

  2. 02

    Lift the stone

Press the ring down over the stone, twist, and lift it out without a knife.

  3. 03

    Slice and scoop

Push the slicing grid under the flesh from the stalk end and the slices come out of the skin together.

Close up

One tool, three working ends

Avocado slicer measured open at 18.3 cm and folded at 12.7 cm
  1. Slotted scoop

Serrated round the rim to cut through the skin. The holes let the flesh come away cleanly when you scoop.

  2. Stone ring

Press it over the stone and twist. The ring grips the stone so you never point a blade at your palm.

  3. Slicing grid

Pushed under the flesh of a half, it cuts even slices for toast or salad and lifts them out of the skin.

  4. Folded

The scoop swings back over the grid, taking it from 18.3 cm down to 12.7 cm for the drawer.

Tool or knife and spoon?

A chef's knife and a tablespoon will always do the job. The tool earns its place on busy mornings and with children helping.

Plastic edges are kinder to fingers but weaker than steel, so wait for ripe fruit.

Questions

Not well. The serrated edge is plastic, so it splits a ripe avocado easily but struggles with one that is still firm. Wait until the skin gives a little under your thumb.

A single generic tool is cheap, so we sell the pair. Keep one in the kitchen drawer and one with the packed lunches, or give the second away.

Press gently near the stalk. If it gives slightly, the plastic edge will cut the skin cleanly. If it feels like a stone, leave it in the fruit bowl for another day or two.

The scoop works on kiwi and on soft mango cheeks once you have cut them off the stone with a knife. The stone ring is sized for avocados only.

My toddler eats avocado now

Toddler will only eat avocado in neat slices, go figure. This makes them without any drama and I scoop the leftovers for mashing.

Good, small reservation

Works well. The plastic feels light and I'd have liked a little more heft, but it has held up fine so far.

Better than I expected

Better than I expected for a plastic tool. Feels light but works every time, even on the knobbly ones. I was doubtful about a plastic scoop with a serrated edge, but on a ripe avocado it goes round the skin easily. Wait for the right ripeness and it's smooth every single time.

Best of both

One tool for home, one for the allotment shed lunch box. Great that it comes as a pair.

Camping cooler staple

It lives in the cooler bag with the avocados. Light, small, and no need to bring a knife or a board. Packed with the wraps, the tortillas and a couple of ripe avocados. Slice at the picnic table, rinse in the dish tub, fold shut and tuck it away for the next meal.

Hen party breakfast

Made avocado toast bar for a hen party and it saved my sanity. Dozen avocados, one tool, nobody waiting. Slicing for twenty with only one helper means anything that speeds up the avocado job is a gift. Two tools, two of us, and we got through a box of them while the main course rested.

Sandwich shop at home

Sliced avocado for turkey sandwiches all week and every slice came out the same thickness. Lunch looks like it came from a cafe.
